Winners for the 2008 LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards were announced last night at a ceremony at the Harriet & Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A., hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
The Civic Light Opera of South Bay Cities production of Miss Saigon received the most awards, winning for Musical Large Theatre, lighting designer Darrell Clark, sound designer John Feinstein, and lead actress Jennifer Paz.
Additional acting winners included John Glover (Lead Actor in a Play, Secrets of the Trade), Joe Spano (Lead Actor in a Play, R. Buckminster Fuller), Laurie Metcalf (Lead Actress in a Play, The Quality of Life), Robert J. Townsend (Lead Actor in a Musical, Jekyll & Hyde), Barry Lynch (Featured Actor in a Play, Of Mice and Men), J. Nicole Brooks (Featured Actress in a Play, As Much As You Can), Randy Rogel (Featured Actor in a Musical, Singin' in the Rain), and Gwen Stewart (Featured Actress in a Musical, All Shook Up). Nilaja Sun won the Ray Stricklyn Memorial Award for Solo Performance for No Child..., while Ensemble Performance was awarded to the cast of Musical Theatre West's The Andrews Brothers.
Notable wins also included Jane Anderson (Playwriting for an Original Play, The Quality of Life), John Bucchino and Daisy Prince (Book/Lyrics/Music for an Original Musical, It's Only Life), Matt Shakman (Director of a Play, Secrets of the Trade), and Avenue Q (Touring Production).
Presenters included Brooke Adams, Edward Asner, John Cho, John Glover, Russell Hornsby, Sharon Lawrence, Hamish Linklater, Sandra Tsing Loh, Matt McGrath, Jennifer Paz, Tonya Pinkins, Tony Shalhoub, Jimmy Smits, Joe Spano, Tracie Thoms, and Zachary Quinto.
